For those those who clicked the link, this is a "vision statement," not a "memo." HAHA.
I am assuming that if you are reading these words right now that you have seen the movie entitled, "Jerry Maguire." If you have not seen it, I would reccommend viewing with great caution. It is a good movie with a good message, but it does have many R-rated scenes.
Nonetheless, the essence of the movie is this: Jerry Maguire is a famous and successful sports agent. He is the best of the best. He works with professional athletes accross all leagues to ensure they get maximum advertising and profits. He negotiates contracts and endorsement deals. Jerry is wildly successful at what he does.
However, something happens which keeps him from sleeping one night. He is convicted. He does not like himself. He has been taking advantage of his clients and not seeking their best interest. Actually, he and his whole company have lost their original vision. They have become untethered. They have become greedy and are exploiting their clients rather than taking care of them. On that night, Jerry is convicted. Thus, he sets out to write his "vision statement" and he proceeds to mail it to everyone in the office.
This event sets off a chain of events that eventually leads to him being fired. The company did not like his "vision" of fewer clients and more quality service. Thus, Jerry is thrown into trial to see if he will hold to his principles or if he will cave in adversity and return to his former ways. He must figure it out. He must make money to survive, but he also wants to stay true to what he knows is right. The rest of the movie is about his journey to happiness and contentment as he seeks to live out his vision statement.
How often are we faced with these same questions? Where money and our dreams are pited against caring and seeking the good of others. I write this blog today to declare that we should learn something from Jerry Maguire. Here is the take-home-message: Our happiness and dreams are not at odds with other people. Rather, are happiness and dreams are intricately wrapped up in how we treat others. If we seek the good of others, we will be much happier. If we serve others, we will find ourselves full of joy and I bet we will have found our dreams as well. Contentment is being happy now in what I have and then happily working towards future dreams with an eye always towards seeking the best interest of others.
Now go and live with the secret of Jerry Maguire's success! This is my vision.
